You describe a project's build in the CMake language, in CMakeLists.txt files, and a generator writes the input files for a native build system. Generators cover Makefiles, Ninja, Visual Studio, and Xcode. Kitware maintains and supports CMake, which is distributed under the BSD 3-clause license.
