Virtualization, IT Support, and... Home Labs? How Automox Techies Use Automox

Episode 07   Published July 25, 2024 26 minute watch

Summary

Landon Miles repurposes a few cast-off office machines into about 70 Proxmox endpoints so he can build Automox demos and test worklets without touching anyone else's systems. He runs Automox in two other places at home too: across his family's laptops so security patches apply automatically, and on a one-liter PC bought broken off eBay that hosts a media server, file server, home automation hub, and the Mealie recipe app. Guest Anthony Maxwell, an Automox software engineer who came from systems and network architecture, runs a Dell R720XD Proxmox build with a three-node Docker Swarm on top of it. Before joining Automox he was a customer, automating CIS-benchmark policy compliance and patching through worklets as an independent IT consultant. The two also talk through using a home lab as a no-consequences sandbox to vet tools like HashiCorp Vault and self-hosted GitHub Actions runners before production.
